Hey folks, Random Old Records Podcast is still here after thirteen years. Still using other people's words to tell my own story. Still listening to all of the music to find the gems. Still wearing a mask, still not leaving my house. I must be doing something right, because EPISODE #95 is one of the best things I've ever done!

This time around, you'll hear lots of acoustic guitars and big harmonies. You'll hear silly lyrics and big dramatic flourishes. You'll hear huge beats and sing-song melodies and equal measures of angst and peace. You'll hear new tracks from Marina Allen, Andrew Gabbard, Drab City, and Aaron Frazer, plus classics by Happy and Artie Traum, Kak, Best Coast, and Gillian Welch, along with tons more great stuff. You'll enjoy it all, I'm sure of it!

Random Old Records Podcast #92

Spring has sprung, and all I wanna do is listen to music! EPISODE #92 of Random Old Records continues the vintage punk rock thread of last episode, along with some jingle, some jangle and some plain ol' rock n' roll. Let's get into it!

This time around, you'll hear stone-cold classics from the Circle Jerks and Uniform Choice, underrated 90s pop-punk from Bum and the Bomb Bassets, a stack of boppers from the venerable Mutant Pop label by The Hissyfits, The Proms, and The Beautys, new stuff from The Spits and Gen Pop, plus a whole lot more! In between the tracks, you'll hear excerpts from the classic 1975 crime caper Las Vegas Lady, starring Stella Stevens. All in all, it's another episode I'm mighty proud of, so I hope everyone likes it!

Random Old Records Podcast #91

OK, so 2021 started and I somehow became obsessed with 90s punk rock again. It's pretty intense, probably the most obsessed I've been since well, the 90s. EPISODE #91 of Random Old Records is filled with classics and sleepers from the last decade of the 20th century, plus a whole lot more.

You'll hear Bikini Kill, Tilt, Propagandhi, the Fastbacks, and Pennywise. You'll also hear garage rock and psychedelic classics from the Belfast Gypsies, the Moon, and the Vogues, plus soul bangers by Ray Redmond and Della Reese. You'll also hear some ska, I think? I'm not gonna lie, this is one of the best episodes I've ever done. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Random Old Records Podcast #90

Right under the wire, here's one more podcast for this blessed and cursed year of 2020. EPISODE #90 of Random Old Records is mostly new jams this time, with a few old favorites sprinkled in here and there. It goes all over the place! If you're into snapping electronic percussion, unexpected sax solos, uninhibited crooning, pronounced accents, and way too many power chords, this is the episode for you!

I am a huge fan of the raw and jubilant electronic jams made by Los Angeles label 100% Silk, so this set kicks off with a track from label mainstays LA Vampires. You'll then hear swaggering fire from US Girls and Special Interest, poppy-punk from The Beths, Brick Head, and Dumspell, psychedelic classics from Margo Guryan and The Pretty Things, wistful modern pop from Marie Davidson and En Attendant Ana, plus so much more. It's an open window on a warm winter morning.

Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Come back next month (or so) for another episode of Random Old Records. As always, thanks for listening!

Also, if you've been following me for awhile you'll know I started working on a zine back in 2013, and somehow it's finally finished! Random Old Records Zine #1 is out and shipping now! $6.50 postage-paid, 20 pages, black & white, all previously unpublished on this blog or elsewhere. Random Old Records Podcast #89

Hey folks! It's that time of year again. EPISODE #89 of Random Old Records is the annual 5/10/15/20 edition, featuring classic tracks from the years 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. This will probably be the last episode of Random Old Records of 2020 and I wanted to go out with a bang, so this one is JAM-PACKED with hit after hit after hit!

Going back 20 years to 2000, you'll hear post-hardcore rippers from At The Drive-In and The Anniversary, then 2005 brings pop bliss from Epoxies and Nada Surf. 2010 was the year of garage rock like Dum Dum Girls and Best Coast, and 2015 closes things out with the nervy post-punk of Courtney Barnett and Bully. In between there's 11 more absolute classics, so climb in the time machine and turn the dial way back!

Random Old Records Podcast #88

Like a lot of people, I haven't left my house much for the last seven months. I've spent a lot of time with headphones on, trying to find the dreamiest music possible to escape into and pass the time. EPISODE #88 is crammed full of distorted guitars, piercing synths, vocal histrionics, and meditations on lives both small and large.

In this hour, you will hear classics from Lone Justice, The Soup Dragons, and Beverly, brand new jams from White Poppy, Maria Minerva, and The Lemon Twigs, plus a whole lot more. It jumps from country-rock to soul to garage pop to deep dance beats to progressive peacoat rock to trance-folk to throwback Britpop to real-deal Britpop. It's best experienced after spinning around for a few seconds and collapsing on the floor. Enjoy!

Random Old Records Podcast #87

2020, am I right?! The longest year in recorded human history is rolling on and on and so is Random Old Records. EPISODE #87 doesn't really have a theme or a point, other than containing 20 of the best songs I've heard in the past 30 days. So...let's dig in and let's get it on!

It all kicks off with a rare blast of horn-driven proto-punk from The Rats, then winds its way through classic garage rock and punk from The Pagans, Thee Headcoatees, The Customs, The Pandoras, and maybe even a couple bands that don't start with "The". Then, you'll hear vital new post-punk jams from Sweeping Promises, Lithics, and Naked Roommate, before the whole thing finishes up with a bone-chilling goth-country classic from Sammi Smith called "Saunders Ferry Lane". There's music for the head and music for the heart and music for the soul and music for the feet. Enjoy!

Random Old Records Podcast #85

So I've been mostly housebound for the last four months with plenty of free time. Luckily, while most of life has been on pause, the torrent of incredible music continues unchecked. I've been filling my head with jams of all eras, both new and new to me, and EPISODE #85 of Random Old Records is just a small sample of the musical riches that can be found with a little bit of digging.

Loveland, Ohio's Colemine Records (and its subsidiary Karma Chief) continue to pump out hits, and this time around you'll hear the recent offerings of the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Monophonics, and Michael Nau. Righteous, romantic soul is the vibe most of the way, then it gets slow and easy for awhile before crashing into a more rockin' finish. Along the way you'll meet The Altons, La La Brooks, Heron, Mortimer, Penetration, the Brothers of Soul, and many more. It's an hour of deep cuts for deep heads, so close your eyes and dig in!

Random Old Records Podcast #84

If you've been listening to Random Old Records for awhile, you'll know that weather and the seasons are one of the primary inspirations behind the music on the show. Well it's hot and hazy here in Ohio, so naturally EPISODE #84 is laid back and easy going to help beat back the sweat and the steam of summer in the city.

You will hear pub rock classics from Ducks Deluxe and Brinsley Schwarz, country-tinged obscurities by Twin Engine and Sanford Clark, new jams from Rose City Band, Primo, Lavender Flu, and Brigid Dawson, psychedelic pop hidden gems by Birmingham Sunday and Paul Parrish, plus so much more. Twang, loping rhythms, ghostly echo chambers, chill vibes that veer close to bad dreams, and cautious optimism is the order of the day. It's like ice for your brain, so hit that download button and give it a whirl.

Random Old Records Podcast #83

Dreams, dreaming, and dreamy music is the order of the day. Everything is transforming and reality is realer than ever, and I find myself closing my eyes and dreaming of dinner at my favorite restaurant, a quick browse at the record store, and a stop at the Creamy Whip on the way home. EPISODE #83 of Random Old Records Podcast might not include any Moby Grape this time around, but it's still filled with music dedicated to good dreams and things that make you happy.

This trip around the land of nod includes a touch of the psychedelic, plenty of insistent drum beats, sawing strings, soaring synths, a little mysticism, a little drama, and vocal harmonies out the wazoo. You'll hear new and old jams from Once And Future Band, Honeybus, Riki, Yumi Zouma, Wax Idols, The Crabs, John Foxx, Cold Beat, and so much more. In between the songs, you will hear bits from the 1974 movie Mr. Sycamore, a wacky slice of vintage new age nonsense about a man who wants to become a tree. Plant your feet, grab some water, and let this episode be the soundtrack!

Random Old Records Podcast #82

You know what? Music is the best. Not only that, but music is still the best and will continue to be the best no matter how awful things might seem. I've felt just about as helpless as most of you probably feel right now and I can't change the world, but I can sure as hell play a little music for everyone. EPISODE #82 of Random Old Records Podcast is a 58 minute and 19 second blast of fun punk rock escapism for all of the kids in America.

You will hear classics by The Muffs, Pointed Sticks, and Young Canadians, brand new jams from Shadow Show, Personality Cult, The Archaeas, and The Bombpops, plus a whole lot more. I tried to keep it fun and silly, but there's rage and sadness and stolen joy and noise and darkness and catharsis and peace in there as well. Log out of social media, throw the newspaper in the trash, and listen to some damn music instead. Remember? Music is the best!

Random Old Records Podcast #81

Wow what a year it's been already, huh?! If you're looking for some low-stakes joy and relief from dealing with life here on Earth in 2020 AD, you've come to the right place. EPISODE #81 of Random Old Records Podcast is stacked with good music and escapism, so slam that download button right now!

I've been in a deep country phase ever since watching the Ken Burns documentary last year, so this episode starts off with some classics from Dottie West and Mike Nesmith, plus honky tonk rarities from Johnny David and Joyce Cobb. My other obsession lately has been Various Artists box sets from the Cherry Red group, so I also highlighted some jams by The Tremoloes and Byzantium from the incredible Getting It Together In The Country collection of UK country rock. As if the theme wasn't crystal clear, the interstitial sounds in this episode come from the 1967 stock cars n' moonshine epic Hell On Wheels, starring country legend Marty Robbins! You'll also hear recent jams from Holly Golightly, Paint, Parsnip, En Attendant Ana, and a whole lot more. This is a fun one, so stay indoors and check it out!

Random Old Records Podcast #80

Winter is rolling on and I can't believe another month has already passed. January brought my 40th birthday, and now it's time for EPISODE #80 of Random Old Records Podcast. Thanks for checking in, I think this one is something great, so let's not waste time!

I've been a huge fan of the podcast You Don't Know Mojack, which has been doing deep dives into the SST Records discography for a few years now. So, this episode kicks off with some songs from the label's heyday by Das Damen and Firehose, plus a track from the same era from Cincinnati punks The Erector Set. This comes from the INCREDIBLE compilation We Were Living In Cincinnati, which collects rare punk from my hometown and was released by the ever dependable Hozac Records. Get it now! After that hot start, you will hear old and new pop, both indie and power, from the likes of Tacocat, Comet Gain, Crabby Appleton, Prix, The Pandoras, and so much more.

Random Old Records Podcast #79

Happy 2020! I got married in 2019 which was pretty incredible, but otherwise the year was mighty rough in all sorts of ways for all sorts of people. Luckily, music continues to be amazing and it always seems to be there to lift everyone back up when they need it the most. EPISODE #79 of Random Old Records Podcast is here to start off the new year right with an hour of that sweet, sweet musical nectar!

Loveland, Ohio-based Colemine Records was the hands-down label of the year, putting out a steady string of soulful and thoughtful LPs and 45s. So, it makes sense to feature a stack of jams from their catalog, including the Harlem Gospel Travelers, Thee Sinseers, and Black Pumas. Vivian Girls came back after a long absence with an incredible new album, and you will also hear the crucial "I'm Far Away" on this episode (plus more in the future, it's REALLY good). In between, there are a bunch of new and old jams from Opal, Possible Humans, Chromatics, Death and Vanilla, plus so much more. You might have also noticed that a bunch of older episodes have been added to the feed, and more are on the way, so stay tuned for more vintage shows and great new stuff in 2020!

Random Old Records Podcast #78

2019 is nearly over, and I don't feel like doing a best of the year playlist, so I figured the next best thing to do would be to go back in time! EPISODE #78 is the annual 5/10/15/20 episode of Random Old Records, which surveys the best or most interesting music from 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago.

1999 features emo and pop punk from Saves The Day, American Football, and the Get Up Kids, while 2004 brings indie anthems from Aloha and Panthers. Going back 10 years to 2009, you'll hear classic garage pop from Grass Widow, Strange Boys, and King Automatic, and 2014 finishes things up with dreamy psych by The Paperhead and the Allah-Las. 2020 will bring more brand new jams to Random Old Records, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy the retro ride!
